Canada is recognized around the world for its leadership in offering a safe haven to people who are in need of refugee protection. This is recognized in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. However, your ability to make a claim may have been affected with recent changes to the immigration landscape in Canada
Designated Safe CountryCanada's Minister of Citizenship & Immigration recently announced a list of designated safe countries which may affect a claim from these countries. The list includes countries that do not normally produce refugees, but do respect human rights and offer state protection. The countries listed are:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel (excludes Gaza and the West Bank), Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States of America.
